    Filler for Acne Scars

There has been an increase in the number and quality of filler substances used to help plump up acne scars. Restylane and Hylaform are now available and there are many more to come. The use of injectable fillers for acne scars that are wide, shallow, and depressed yields the most satisfactory and most predictable results.

Scars may be augmented with substances of varying duration. Some short-lived fillers, such as the collagens (Zyderm, Zyplast, Cosmoderm), will only last for 3, 4 months.

The most commonly used fillers for acne scars are those with a somewhat longer lifespan. Hyaluronic acid fillers (Restylane, Juvederm) last about 6 months.

Other substances can be used to correct scars and last years or even indefinitely.
Liquid silicone fills atrophic scars permanently due to the formation of collagen around silicone microdroplets.
This is a specialized technique performed by only a limited number of physicians.

Remember: there are many different types of acne scars (ice pick, box car, rolling type scars), and they must be approached using different techniques and combinations of techniques including lasers, acid peels and then fillers as a final therapy.
